Numbers cannot be proofread
Every other page on this site is about vocabulary in some form — long clinical terms, nested legal clauses, unfamiliar surnames. Accounting is the one where the difficulty is not language at all.

Here is why that matters more than the raw number suggests. Written language is redundant and numbers are not. If you mistype a letter in depreciation, the word is still recognisable and both you and a spell-checker will catch it. If you mistype a digit in 47,318, the result is 47,381 — an equally valid number, indistinguishable from a correct one, that no tool will flag and no amount of re-reading will reveal.
This is not a small distinction. It is the reason accounting developed double-entry bookkeeping, trial balances, reconciliations and control totals in the first place. The entire apparatus exists because the profession worked out centuries ago that numeric records cannot be verified by inspection, only by arithmetic.
One nuance in our own data worth noting: digit density actually peaks in the Medium set at 9.01 per 100 characters rather than in the Hard set at 6.13, because the Medium passages are source documents — registers, ledgers and statements that are almost pure figures. The Hard passages carry more difficult language (9.8% long words against 4.9% in Easy) but proportionally less arithmetic. If numeric accuracy is what you are training, Medium is the set to drill.
The divide-by-nine check
Since numeric errors cannot be found by reading, accountants find them by arithmetic. The most useful of these tricks takes about three seconds and is worth knowing before any finance interview.
When a trial balance does not agree, divide the difference by 9
If it divides evenly, you are very probably looking at a transposition — two digits swapped — or a slide, where the decimal point has moved. If it does not divide evenly, the cause is more likely a missing entry or a one-sided posting.
Worked through: suppose the debit column totals 284,916.35 and the credit column totals 284,961.35. The difference is 45.00, and 45 divided by 9 is 5 exactly. That points at a transposition, and indeed 916 and 961 are the same digits reordered. You now know what kind of error you are hunting and roughly what size, which turns an open-ended search through hundreds of entries into a targeted one.
Why it always works. Swapping two digits changes a number by the difference between those digits multiplied by the difference between their place values. Any difference between two powers of ten is divisible by 9 — ten minus one is 9, a hundred minus ten is 90, a thousand minus a hundred is 900. So the error inherits that factor of 9 no matter which digits you swap or where they sit. A decimal slide works the same way: 123.00 typed as 12.30 leaves a difference of 110.70, and 110.70 divided by 9 is 12.30.
It is a screening test rather than a proof. A difference divisible by 9 can have other causes, and two offsetting errors can hide each other entirely. But as a first move it is free, and it is the kind of practical knowledge that separates someone who has done the work from someone who has only studied it.
Ten-key is a separate skill, measured differently
A point that catches people out in finance hiring: the typing test and the numeric test are often two different assessments, scored in different units.
General typing is reported in words per minute. Numeric data entry is reported in keystrokes per hour, and a common benchmark for a dedicated data entry role is 8,000 to 10,000 KPH. The two do not convert cleanly, because KPH counts every keystroke while WPM bundles five characters into a notional word. If a job posting asks for "10-key by touch", it is the second measure it means.
Ten-key by touch is genuinely a distinct skill. The home position is 4-5-6, taken by the index, middle and ring fingers, with the raised dot on the 5 key serving the same anchoring role that F and J serve on the main rows. The thumb or the little finger handles zero and Enter depending on the layout you adopt. Most people who touch-type competently on the alphabet still glance down at the keypad, which quietly caps their numeric throughput well below what it could be.
It takes a fortnight or so of deliberate practice to fix, and it is probably the highest-return two weeks available to anyone entering transaction-heavy finance work. The numbers typing test is the right tool for that drilling, since it presents figures without prose interleaved.
Formatting conventions that are noticed immediately
- Negatives go in parentheses. A deduction is written as (2,400) rather than −2,400 in most financial statements. Typing a minus sign where the house style expects brackets marks you out instantly.
- Decimal places stay consistent. Within a single statement, either everything carries two decimal places or nothing does. Mixing 412,800 and 412,800.00 in the same column is the most common formatting error in submitted work.
- Currency symbols usually sit in the header, not the cells. A column headed "Amount (USD)" does not repeat the symbol on every row.
- Figures align on the decimal point. This is a formatting job rather than a typing one, but a column that does not align is the first thing a reviewer sees.
- Account codes are typed, never guessed. 6200 and 6020 are both plausible expense codes. Unlike a misspelled word, a wrong code posts cleanly and stays wrong until someone reconciles the account.
Roles, and what actually constrains each one
The usual caveat applies: no professional body publishes a required typing speed for any of these roles. What follows is the shape of the work and where the real bottleneck sits, which is more useful than a number.

Frequently asked questions
What typing speed do accounting and bookkeeping jobs require?
Commonly advertised ranges sit around 45 to 60 WPM, but that figure understates what is actually being assessed. Many employers test numeric data entry separately, measured in keystrokes per hour on the numeric keypad rather than in words per minute, and a common benchmark for a dedicated data entry role is 8,000 to 10,000 KPH. If a posting mentions "10-key by touch", it is that second measure it cares about. No professional body publishes a required figure for either.
Why is accounting text so much harder to type accurately?
Because it is saturated with digits, and digits carry no redundancy. This corpus contains 6.16 digits per 100 characters, against 0.55 for medical transcription and 0 for general typing prose. In ordinary text, if you mistype a letter the word usually still resolves — context and spelling rules catch it. In a figure, 47,318 and 47,381 are equally valid numbers. Nothing in the text tells you which one is wrong, which is why accounting has developed its own error-detection arithmetic rather than relying on proofreading.
What is the divide-by-nine rule?
A check accountants use when a trial balance does not agree. If you transpose two digits — typing 4,517 instead of 4,157 — the difference between the wrong figure and the right one is always divisible by 9. The same is true of a "slide", where the decimal point moves, as in 123.00 entered as 12.30. So when the debit and credit columns disagree, the first thing to do is divide the difference by 9. If it goes evenly, you are almost certainly hunting a transposed or slid figure rather than a missing entry. It is not conclusive, but it narrows the search enormously.
Why does the difference always divide by nine?
It falls out of place value. Should I learn ten-key by touch?
If numeric entry is a significant part of your target role, yes, and it is a genuinely separate skill from touch typing on the main keyboard. The home position is 4-5-6 with the index, middle and ring fingers, and the raised dot on the 5 key is the anchor, exactly as F and J are on the main rows. Most people who type well on the alphabet keys still look down for the keypad, which caps their numeric speed far below what it could be. It takes a couple of weeks of deliberate practice to fix.
Does this test use the numeric keypad?
The test measures whatever you type, so you can use the keypad for numbers if you wish. But be aware that the passages mix prose and figures continuously, which is realistic for ledger work but means your hand moves between the keypad and the main keyboard constantly. For dedicated keypad drilling, the numbers test is the better tool, since it presents figures without interleaved text.
What formatting conventions should I watch?
Four in particular. Thousands separators and decimal places must be consistent within a document. Negative amounts are conventionally shown in parentheses rather than with a minus sign, so 2,400 in parentheses means a deduction.
